f you’ve ever wondered how efficiently your body uses oxygen during exercise—or how “fit” your heart and lungs really are—VO₂ cardiorespiratory testing is the gold-standard way to find out. Often called a VO₂ max test, this assessment goes beyond step counts and heart-rate zones to give a clear, clinical snapshot of your aerobic health.
What Is VO₂ Cardiorespiratory Testing?
VO₂ testing measures the maximum amount of oxygen your body can take in, transport, and use during increasing levels of exercise. Oxygen fuels your muscles. The more efficiently your body uses it, the better your cardiorespiratory fitness.
During the test, you’ll exercise on a treadmill or bike while wearing a mask that analyzes your breathing. As the intensity gradually increases, sophisticated sensors track oxygen intake, carbon dioxide output, heart rate, and ventilation. The result is a precise, individualized picture of how your heart, lungs, blood, and muscles work together.
